In 1981, Mas Martinet was born, a lifelong project and a dream come true. The brand is the result of the passion of Josep Lluís Pérez and Montse Ovejero and is now owned by the entire family: Josep Lluís, Montse, Sara, Núria, Adrià, Marc, Jordi, Armando, and Pilar. The unique wines of Mas Martinet in Priorat have enormous aging potential. For over 25 years, Martinet has reigned at the top of the Priorat appellation. In recent years, father Pérez has retired from Mas Martinet, and the wines are now vinified by Sara Pérez (see also Venus, Dido, and Gratallops ). Sara is also the wife of another icon, René Barbier Jr., known for Clos Mogador , and René and Sara also make wines under their own names, Sara Pérez y René Barbier. Naturally, we also carry these wines. Clos Martinet comes from the plots of the Mas d'en Martinet estate, located in the wine region of the town of Gratallops. The slate-rich land and the varying exposures of the vineyards give this wine the typical character of an estate each year. Mas Martinet is one of the pioneers of the new Priorat, the Pérez family's project. Since 2017, they no longer use a sorting table or a cypress, but all their fermentations are with the grapes' yeasts; and they stopped chilling the grapes 15 years ago. From 2006 to 2016, they increased the number of full bunches in their fermentations, which are now 100% full bunches for all wines except the Martinet Bru. They have 25 hectares of vineyards across five different locations, cultivated organically and biodynamically using permaculture and regenerative agriculture. The Martinet Bru comes partly from an estate called Mas Seró, located in the Masos de Falset region of the Serra Alta, at an altitude of 400 meters and facing southwest, and another estate in Torroja, which is colder and deeper. It is a blend of Garnatxa Negra, Carinyena, Sirà, and a small amount of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, naturally made organically/biodynamically without chemicals. The Martinet Bru is the gateway to Priorat. It is a wine of our time, more accessible in every way. The vineyards where it originates receive the southwesterly wind called garbinada, a humid sea breeze known for cooling the last hours of the hottest summer afternoons and for allowing for slower and longer aging. The Martinet Bru is a modern, beautiful, tasty, and fresh wine, yet with the typical structure and minerality of Priorat. The Martinet Bru has a deep cherry-red color, ripe fruity aromas, expressive, powerful, mineral, toasted, and creamy oak. Flavorful, fruity, and meaty on the palate. A wonderfully long finish of fine cocoa and chocolate. Exceptionally well-balanced. This is a 1.5-liter magnum—even more delicious, festive, and with a longer drinking window.
