- Description
Poggio Scalette is located in the heart of Greve in Chianti. The hills around the Greve valley are undeniably one of the best locations in Italy for growing wine and olives. The combination of terroir and location in relation to the sun contribute to the wonderful quality of these wines. Poggio Scalette itself owes its name to the landscape that consists mainly of stone walls that support the terraces on which the vineyards are planted. The Il Carbonaione Alta Valle della Greve has become a household name and, as with many top wineries from Tuscany, 2016 was a great year, so it is not surprising that the Il Carbonaione has received very high reviews. Suckling begins his review with: "What a crazy nose of pure fruit...." . The Il Carbonaione is made from 100% Sangiovese di Lamole. The wine undergoes a maceration of about 12 days, after which it is aged in barrels (Allier, Vosges, Nevers and American oak) for 18 months and finally matures in the bottle for another 6 months before being launched on the market. The Il Carbonaione is a robust expression of Sangiovese from a classic vintage. The wine is carefully balanced yet powerful, with aromas of cherries and red currants, followed by cultivated earth and garden herbs. You also get lighter tones of licorice and tar at the back. Despite the opulence and generosity of the bouquet, the wine ultimately remains elegant on the palate and is wonderfully balanced. Decanting in his younger years. 93/100 Parker & 97/100 Suckling
