2022 Puglia Pop Fico

The Fico from Puglia Pop is a red wine made from the susumaniello grape. This rare age-old grape variety is almost exclusively found in the Salento area. The name Susumaniello originated from the Italian word 'somarello' which means donkey, this is because this grape variety can carry very large bunches of pigeons, just like the donkeys that were used for this in the past. The harvest of the grapes starts in October. This is done completely manually, after which the grapes are transported in crates to be pressed. After this, fermentation takes place in steel tanks, followed by the action of the skins for 3 to 5 weeks to extract all color and flavors. After this, the wine is allowed to age in large 440 liter amphorae made of clay, followed by another 6 months in 10 hectoliter barrels of American and French oak. After which the wine is bottled in its very special bottle. This highly innovative bottle is special because it insulates the wine 45% better against temperature changes and 100% protected against light than a normal wine bottle. This keeps the wine fresh for longer and allows you to drink the wine as the winemaker intended, without unpleasant external influences. The bottle is also 100% recyclable and contributes to social projects in Puglia. The result of this entire process is a beautiful ruby red wine that reveals a refined bouquet of aromas. The aromas of blackberries, cassis and cherries intertwined with fresh herbs and licorice. With excellent structure and balance, this wine ends with a long and fine aftertaste.
