- Description
Weingut Günter Steinmetz, one of the most renowned Mosel producers, is located in the heart of the German Mosel region and has been making wines based on terroir for generations. It is a family business, led by Stefan Steimetz (5th generation) and his wife Sammie since 1999. Stefan Steinmetz is known for producing wines that reflect the unique characteristics of his historic vineyards and is one of the icons of the Mosel region, which is also supported by (very) high ratings of his wines by the international wine press. The Brauneberg vineyards are known for their steep slopes and unique slate soils, which contribute to the characteristic minerality of the wines. The combination of the cool climate and soil conditions ensures a slow ripening of the grapes, resulting in complex aromas and a refined acidity. Weingut Günther Steinmetz takes a traditional and sustainable approach in both the vineyard and the cellar. The grapes are harvested by hand and undergo spontaneous fermentation without the addition of commercial yeasts. Mosel, Germany Grape variety: 100% Riesling Style: Spätlese – noble sweet, elegant, mineral and lively The Riesling Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Spätlese is one of the most prestigious and characteristic vineyards of the Mosel. The steep slopes, rich in slate, offer perfect conditions for late-harvest Riesling. Thanks to the long ripening time on the vine, the grapes develop a rich aromatic intensity and retain their refined acidity. The 2023 Spätlese from Günther Steinmetz is a wine that combines richness and precision. The bouquet opens with ripe peach, pineapple, mango and lime, complemented by floral notes of orange blossom and a hint of honey. On the palate, the wine is lush and juicy, with a subtle sweetness that is perfectly balanced by a lively acidity and an elegant minerality. The finish is long, fresh and refined. This Spätlese is an example of classic Mosel Riesling: a wine with tension, clarity and depth that is accessible when young, but will age beautifully. Wine and food pairings The combination of residual sweetness, fresh acidity and aromatic power makes this wine particularly versatile at the table. Some well-considered combinations: Mildly spicy Asian dishes Dishes such as Thai green curry, Peking duck with five-spice powder or Vietnamese dishes with lime and chili find a wonderful counterbalance in the sweet-sour profile of the wine. The residual sugar tempers the spiciness, while the acids keep the dish fresh. Dishes with fruity sauces or glazes Think of duck breast with orange glaze, pork tenderloin with apricot chutney or chicken with pineapple and ginger. The fruit in the wine matches the dish and brings harmony to sweet and sour preparations. Shellfish with rich garnishes Lobster with vanilla butter, scallops with pumpkin cream or shrimp in a coconut-lime sauce benefit from the tension between aromatic intensity and refreshing acidity in the wine. Semi-hard and blue-veined cheeses Cheeses such as Gorgonzola Dolce, Roquefort or mild blue cheeses combine perfectly with the sweetness of the wine. The wine softens the salty intensity of the cheese and provides a layered taste sensation. Fruit tarts and desserts with citrus or white fruit Pear and frangipane tart, apricot crumble or a passion fruit panna cotta are ideal accompaniments. The wine enhances the fruit and ensures that the dessert does not feel too heavy. James Suckling has rated this wine with an impressive 96 points and Vinous with 95 points, which underlines the exceptional quality and potential of this Riesling.
