La Mission Haut-Brion is the sister company of Château Haut-Brion. The winery belongs to the Graves wine region, in the commune of Talence, with additional estates in Pessac. The winery also produces a second wine from younger vines, La Chapelle de la Mission, since the 1991 vintage, and the dry white wine Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc since the merger with Château Laville Haut-Brion in 2010. The vineyards extend over 21 hectares between Pessac and Léognan, with a distribution of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 7% Cabernet Franc. The estate produces an average of between 6,000 and 7,000 cases of its grand vin, La Mission Haut-Brion, annually. For the second wine, La Chapelle de la Mission, an average of 4,000 cases are produced. The white Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc has an annual production of 500 to 700 cases. Climate and growing season of the 2024 harvest year The 2024 growing season was characterized by a cooler and wetter-than-average winter, which led to early bud break in mid-March. Persistent rain slowed growth, and fungal diseases required extra attention. In July, the weather improved significantly, and meticulous vineyard work—such as leaf thinning—optimized air circulation and ripening. A dry northeasterly wind in September contributed to healthy, concentrated grapes, resulting in an even, precise harvest between September 18 and October 2. Grape varieties and blend of Château La Mission Haut-Brion Rouge 2024 The blend of the 2024 vintage consists of 46.5% Merlot, 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2.5% Cabernet Franc. The provisional alcohol content is 13.2%. The wine was vinified with great care, using only perfectly ripe and healthy grapes. Aging takes place in 75% new French oak barrels, which contributes to the complexity and structure without masking the freshness. Color, aroma and taste of Château La Mission Haut-Brion Rouge 2024 The wine displays a deep garnet red color with purple reflections. On the nose, it is powerful, complex, and intense, with aromas of red and black fruit, such as black cherry and blackberry, complemented by notes of licorice and spices. Upon swirling, the bouquet opens up further and reveals exceptional layering. On the palate, the initial taste is full and fleshy. The wine develops smoothly, with an impressive texture, ripe tannins, and a long, harmonious finish. Despite the climatic challenges, this vintage offers a beautiful result that combines structural strength and elegant freshness.
