  • Description
About Weingut Günther Steinmetz and the Moselle Weingut Günther Steinmetz is located in Brauneberg, in the heart of the German Mosel region. Since the 1950s, the family-run winery has become one of the region's most highly regarded. Under the leadership of Stefan Steinmetz, wines are produced that are internationally acclaimed for their purity, precision, and expression of terroir. Steinmetz's vineyards are situated on extremely steep slopes with old vines, often rooted in slate soils that produce wines with tension and minerality. The focus is entirely on Riesling, supplemented by a few Pinot Noir plots. The Mosel is a cool-climate region with a long growing season, resulting in grapes with intense aromas and vibrant acidity. The river acts as a natural mirror, providing additional warmth from the sunlight, allowing the grapes to ripen optimally. The Neumagener Rosengärtchen vineyard The Neumagener Rosengärtchen is one of the Mosel's hidden gems. This steep, south-facing slope is composed primarily of red and gray slate. The microclimate is slightly warmer than the nearby Brauneberg slopes, resulting in a more powerful, mature style. The vines in this parcel average over 70 years old and are deeply rooted, resulting in impressive complexity and low yields. This rare combination of age, location, and soil produces a Riesling with a distinctive character and refined structure. The name "Rosengärtchen" refers to the fragrant flowers that once grew along the vineyard, a fitting image for the aromatic finesse of this wine. Vinification according to the official fact sheet The harvest for the 2024 Günther Steinmetz Riesling Neumagener Rosengärtchen Grosses Gewächs took place at the end of October, entirely by hand. The grapes were rigorously selected and spontaneously fermented with indigenous yeasts. The wine then matured on its fine lees in large wooden foudres, without fining or filtering. The result is a bone-dry Riesling with only 2 grams of residual sugar per liter and an alcohol content of 12.5%. The wine combines ripe fruit notes with a striking mineral structure and enormous length. Thanks to its balance of intensity and freshness, this wine has ageing potential well into the second half of the century, with a recommended drinking window of 2028 to 2060 . Tasting notes and character In the glass, the wine displays a bright, light gold color with a faint green shimmer. The bouquet opens with aromas of ripe apricot, white peach, lemon zest, and a hint of smoke. The aroma has a floral note reminiscent of rose petals and chamomile, characteristic of this vineyard. The taste clearly reveals the power of the old vines: concentrated, with abundant energy and a salty minerality that gives the wine length and depth. The texture is silky, while the acidity remains vibrant and elegantly balances the whole. According to Vinous (96 points), this is a wine "full of energy and tension, where stone and fruit blend seamlessly into a sleek yet powerful expression." James Suckling awarded it 98 points , calling it "a dry Riesling with enormous vibrancy, precision, and length—drinkable now, but better from 2027 onward." The 2024 wine year The 2024 growing season presented challenges, but resulted in an exceptional collection for Günther Steinmetz. Due to low fruit set, the age of the vines, and careful selection during harvest, the yield was about a third lower than usual. This resulted in grapes with high concentration and intensity. The dry Rieslings fermented easily with almost no residual sugar, giving them a crystal-clear expression of terroir. The 2024 vintage is internationally acclaimed as one of the estate's finest to date – with wines that combine power, tension, and elegance at a rare level.
