The 2022 Domaine Prieuré Roch Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Le Clos des Varoilles Monopole is one of the most exceptional wines from the Côte de Nuits. Sourced from a historic monopole vineyard in Gevrey-Chambertin and produced according to Domaine Prieuré Roch’s uncompromising philosophy, this Pinot Noir combines power, refinement, and impressive terroir expression. The result is a wine with exceptional depth, a silky texture, and aging potential that effortlessly spans several decades. Domaine Prieuré Roch Domaine Prieuré Roch is one of the most iconic and distinctive producers in Burgundy. Founded by Henry-Frédéric Roch, co-owner of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti for many years, the estate is entirely dedicated to terroir and natural viticulture. The vineyards are cultivated organically and biodynamically, with very low yields and exclusively manual harvesting. In the cellar, intervention is kept to a minimum. The grapes ferment spontaneously with natural yeasts, a large proportion is processed as whole bunches, and the wines are neither clarified nor filtered. As a result, they retain their full aromatic richness, energy, and authenticity. For more information about Domaine Prieuré Roch, please refer to the Winery tab. Le Clos des Varoilles Monopole Le Clos des Varoilles is one of the oldest walled vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin and belongs entirely to Domaine Prieuré Roch. This historic monopole lies directly below the Grand Crus of the appellation and has enjoyed an exceptional reputation for centuries. The calcareous clay and limestone soils, combined with the sheltered location, produce Pinot Noir with great concentration, refinement, and a pronounced mineral signature. As a monopole, Le Clos des Varoilles offers a unique and consistent expression of one specific terroir. Each vintage reflects the distinctive identity of this historic clos, where power and elegance remain constantly in balance. The 2022 volume 2022 is considered one of the finest recent Burgundy vintages. Thanks to a warm growing season and cool nights, the grapes reached optimal ripeness while retaining fresh acidity and aromatic precision. The wines combine concentration and ripe fruit with refinement, tension, and excellent aging potential. For Le Clos des Varoilles, this resulted in a wine with exceptional depth, refined structure, and an impressive balance between power and elegance. Vinification The grapes are harvested entirely by hand and rigorously selected. As is characteristic of Domaine Prieuré Roch, fermentation takes place with natural yeasts, and a significant portion of the grapes is processed as whole bunches. This results in extra aromatic complexity, tension, and a silky tannin structure. The wine then ages quietly in French oak, where the wood serves solely to support the terroir. Clarification and filtering are omitted, so that the wine retains its full character and natural energy. Scent, taste and character The 2022 Le Clos des Varoilles opens with a deep and refined bouquet of black cherries, wild blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries. This is followed by aromas of violets, rose petals, sweet spices, black tea, cedarwood, and a subtle earthy minerality. On the palate, the wine immediately reveals its impressive structure. The core of dark and red fruit is supported by lively acidity and extremely fine tannins that give the wine an almost velvety texture. Despite its concentration, the wine remains remarkably transparent and elegant, with each layer gradually unfolding. The long finish is characterized by chalky minerality, fine spices, floral notes, and a subtle savoryness typical of great Gevrey-Chambertin. The wine lingers for minutes and continually gains in complexity. A historical monopole with great preservation potential Le Clos des Varoilles is one of the most characterful terroirs of Gevrey-Chambertin. Thanks to the natural methods of Domaine Prieuré Roch, the identity of this historic clos is fully preserve
