2017 Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion

This 6.4 hectare domain on top terroir with Haut-Brion as its neighbor has made enormous strides in quality in recent years. The castle, renovated in a contemporary style by Patrice Pichet with winemaker Stéphande Derenoncourt, is considered among the top of Pessac-Léognan among insiders. Colored a deep garnet purple, Les Carmes Haut-Brion diffuses an enticing array of savory scents - black olives, charcuterie and Sichuan pepper - over a core of bright red currant jelly, black cherry and cassis scents, plus fragrant hints of rose petals and candied mandarin peel. The medium-bodied palate is refreshing and elegantly styled, but with a rock-solid backbone of firm, fine-grained tannins and very good freshness, finishing long and perfumed.
