Giacomo Conterno's Barolo "Arione" is produced by one of the most important and well-known names in the Piedmont wine world. The Giacomo Conterno winery was founded in the early 20th century by a family that has cultivated the most prestigious vineyards on the hills of Barolo for generations. The vineyards are carefully managed to produce only the best quality grapes. When the grapes enter the cellar, further quality controls are carried out. A strict sorting process ensures that only the best grapes are used to make the wine. The wines of Giacomo Conterno need little explanation. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Conterno was the inventor of Barolo as we know it today: deep, complex and with the potential to age for a very long time. The current owner, Roberto Conterno, is one of the greatest winemakers in the wine world. The Arione vineyard is located in the municipality of Serralunga d'Alba, one of the most appreciated villages in the Barolo region. The terroir is known for its powerful, structured wines with impressive ageing potential. Terroir: The soils are composed of clay and limestone, ideal for the Nebbiolo grape. It provides a combination of power, minerality and refinement. The warm but balanced growing season of 2020 offered ideal conditions for Nebbiolo, with sufficient sunshine and cool nights to allow the grapes to ripen perfectly. This explains the high scores for the 2020 Barolos. The Barolo Arione is made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes. Fermentation takes place in large, traditional wooden barrels, followed by a long maturation in large Slavonian oak foeders. This process emphasizes the elegance and depth of the wine without masking the terroir. Colour : Deep ruby red with garnet reflections. Nose: Complex and seductive aromas of rose petals, tar, ripe cherries, black plums and a hint of truffle. Subtle hints of spice, earth and tobacco add further layers. Taste: Powerful and structured, with firm but fine tannins. Flavours of dark fruit, spices and earthy tones come together beautifully with a lively acidity that provides balance and freshness. The texture is full and harmonious. Finish: Long and impressive, with mineral notes and a hint of liquorice and balsamic.
