The 2018 Giacomo Conterno Nervi Gattinara Vigna Valferana is an exceptional expression of the Nebbiolo grape, originating from the Gattinara DOCG in Piedmont, Italy. This wine is produced by Nervi-Conterno, the oldest winery in Gattinara, founded in 1906 and owned by Roberto Conterno of the famous Cantina Giacomo since 2018. The Vigna Valferana vineyard is west-facing and located at an altitude of between 300 and 350 meters. The vineyard is characterized by volcanic soils and slightly cooler conditions, resulting in a tight and very focused expression of Nebbiolo. Colour: Bright ruby ​​red with garnet reflections. Nose: Expressive aromas of red fruits such as cherries, complemented by notes of cinnamon, rose petals, blood orange, mint and white pepper. Taste: Complex and deep, with a core of red fruit supported by tannic structures. The wine offers a full expression of Nebbiolo from Gattinara, with additional tannic structure that contributes to the aging potential. This is a 1.5 liter magnum. Nervi and his succeeding generations have continued to build on the reputation of the winery. It is the oldest and best winery in Gattinara in Alto Piemonte, the northern part of Piedmont. In 2018, all eyes were on Gattinara when Roberto Conterno of the famous Barolo winery Giacomo Conterno bought 90% of Nervi, while the then owners Kathrine and Erling Astrup remained partners for 10%. The owners of Nervi were keen to sell their winery on the condition that it would end up in good hands. They found their partner in Roberto Conterno, with whom they had been good friends for years.
