- Description
Schloss Johannisberg has its vineyards in the beautiful Rheingau. In general, the wines from the Rheingau are somewhat more refined and have character and a firmer taste than the wines from Rheinhessen and Rheinpfalz. One of the most beautiful wineries in the Rheingau is without a doubt Schloss Johannisberg. Schloss Johannisberg in the Rheingau is undoubtedly Germany's most prestigious winery and is world famous for its Rieslings. It is the oldest Riesling winery in the world. It has been produced there since 817 and since 1720 it has been 100% Riesling. The winery is centrally located in the area and has a rich history. Originally it was a monastery that was later used as a castle. It was even once owned by our royal family. The wines are the most elegant of the Rheingau area and gain in balance and suppleness as they age. In the magnificent wine cellar, a few bottles have been stored since 1748, so that a unique collection has now been created. Once every 25 years, the wines are tested and provided with new corks. And, it is assured, even the oldest white wines are still very drinkable! The Schloss Johannisberger Gelblack is fermented in 1,200 liter barrels from our own oak trees. This Riesling is very concentrated but very clear with a slightly smoky bouquet of yellow fruit. It is a very aromatic, fresh and elegant Riesling with a great purity. In the glass this Riesling has a golden yellow color with a young, fruity nose with peaches, apricots and pineapple. The wine is certainly already beautiful to drink but will refine further with the years and is certainly perfect to drink until 2040 if stored in the right way. WINE-FOOD SUGGESTIONS Baked salmon with dill and lemon The fresh acids and citrus character of the Riesling enhance the flavour of the salmon and provide a nice contrast with the fattiness of the fish. Asian stir-fry with chicken, bean sprouts and soy sauce The spiciness and umami flavours of this dish are nicely rounded off by the fresh and mineral notes of the Riesling. Dutch shrimps with lime mayonnaise The delicate sweetness of the shrimp pairs well with the fresh character of the wine, while the lime enhances the citrus aromas. Chicory salad with apple and walnuts The bitterness of chicory and the freshness of apple are balanced by the acids and light fruit of the Riesling, while the walnuts provide a nutty structure
