  • Description
The vines for this Pinot Grigio are at least 20 years old and are planted in a soil of gravel and red clay. This gives the Pinot Grigio grapes considerable depth and power. After hand harvesting and rigorous selection, the wine is aged for nine months on sue lie (on the lees) and then bottle aged for another nine months. In the glass, the wine has a beautiful yellow color with copper hues. On the nose, it offers a ripe bouquet of citrus fruit, green apples, pear, apricots, and a hint of minerality. The palate is refreshing and ripe with beautiful notes of white fruit such as pear, apple, and apricot, as well as a hint of almond. This Pinot Grigio is incomparable, complex with ripe fruit and beautiful layers, and a wonderful finish. Gianfranco Gallo of Vie di Romans was one of the first winemakers to see potential in the Friuli alluvial plain. He took over his father's estate over 30 years ago and released his first wine in 1978. Since 1990, almost all of his wines have been mono-varietal (made from the same grape variety), each from a single vineyard. Gianfranco has a unique winemaking style. He is intimately involved in every step of the process: from working in the vineyard to the cellar. He keeps yields per hectare as low as possible and works as organically as possible. His wines first undergo cold maceration, after which they are fermented in stainless steel tanks or oak barrels (tonneaux and barriques). To preserve freshness (good acidity) in the wine, he does not perform malolactic fermentation. After alcoholic fermentation, the wines are aged for 8-9 months in stainless steel tanks or barriques on their 'lie'
