The Ornellaia Masseto has developed beautifully in recent years with regard to the evolution of oak and bottle aging. The 2018 is the first vintage produced in the new winery, now entirely dedicated and designed to meet the expectations of this iconic Merlot from the Tuscan coast. The new building, which uses gravity, features angular concrete fermentation vats and an old-fashioned basket press. The 2018 Masseto is silky, supple and beautifully expressive. Here too, connoisseurs will find a wine of real refinement, with less of the overwhelming intensity that characterised some earlier editions. Blackberry jam, chocolate, leather, licorice and new leather all come to the fore in the glass. Masseto has an extraordinary track record when it comes to ageing. In fact, some of the more restrained vintages prove, over time, to be the most complex and satisfying to drink. That is precisely the direction in which the 2018 vintage seems to be heading.
