- Description
Winery Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is considered one of the world's most iconic wineries and the absolute benchmark for Pinot Noir from the Côte de Nuits. The estate works exclusively with its own vineyards and employs an uncompromising approach in both vineyard and cellar, with extremely low yields, hand selection, and a strong focus on balance and precision. Each cuvée is a direct reflection of the location, vintage, and experience. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab. Region, climate and location The Romanée-Conti vineyard is located in Vosne-Romanée and covers less than two hectares on a gently sloping, east-facing slope. The soil consists of limestone and clay, which contributes to tension, refinement, and aromatic complexity. The 2021 vintage was significantly affected by a heavy spring frost, which destroyed a large portion of the harvest. What remained ripened slowly and evenly, resulting in wines with pronounced perfume and finesse. Vineyards and grape varieties This wine comes from a single monopoly vineyard and is made exclusively from Pinot Noir. Due to frost damage in 2021, yields were exceptionally low, which contributed to extra concentration and texture. The scarcity of this vintage is significant, even by this estate's standards. Harvest, vinification and maturation The harvest took place between September 23rd and October 2nd. After rigorous selection, the grapes were fermented entirely as whole bunches, without destemming. Vinification focused on preserving perfume and purity. Maturation took place in new oak barrels until bottling, which took place between December 2022 and May 2023. Despite the low yields, this did not result in harshness, but rather in a remarkably smooth texture. Color, smell and taste The wine displays a bright, ruby-red color. On the nose, aromas of sweet red berries, rose petals, violets, and exotic spices unfold, complemented by subtle notes of espresso and floral depth. On the palate, the wine is full and seamless, with a remarkably integrated structure. Lively acidity, silky tannins, and intense retronasal aromas blend effortlessly. The finish is long, slightly saline, and refined, with a purity and precision that make this vintage particularly appealing. Development and drinking window William Kelley of The Wine Advocate, who rated the wine 98 points, predicts a drinking window of approximately 2031 to 2065. Despite this long cellaring potential, the wine is already characterized by a remarkable softness and accessibility, typical of the estate's 2021 style. Summary of professional reviews William Kelley of The Wine Advocate awarded the 2021 Romanée-Conti a score of 98 points, describing it as the estate's most integrated and complex wine of the vintage. He emphasized the harmony between acidity, tannins, and aromatic intensity, as well as the refined, salty finish. The vintage is praised for its perfume, sensuality, and exceptional balance.
