  • Description
Clos l'Église Winery Clos l'Église is a historic Pomerol estate with roots dating back to the 18th century. The château enjoys a privileged location alongside iconic estates like Clinet and La Fleur-Pétrus. Under the Garcin family's leadership, the estate utilizes low yields, careful selection, and matures in high-quality oak. The style is powerful and concentrated, yet retains precision and terroir expression. More information about this winery can be found under the "Winery" tab. Region and terroir The vineyards are situated on the renowned clay and gravel soils of the Pomerol plateau. This combination creates depth, structure, and a pronounced mineral undertone. The warm and concentrated 2022 growing season produced ripe, powerful grapes with impressive aromatic intensity. Vineyards and grape varieties In 2022, the blend features a remarkably high proportion of Cabernet Franc, approximately 30%, supplemented with Merlot. Cabernet Franc adds structure, spice, and tension, while Merlot provides roundness, depth, and a velvety texture. The plots are harvested and vinified separately to ensure maximum precision. Harvest, vinification and maturation After rigorous selection, the wine was fermented and aged in oak barrels. In this warm year, extraction was chosen to enhance power and concentration without sacrificing balance. The result is a structured yet refined Pomerol with clear tannin definition. Color, smell and taste Deep dark red with purple highlights. The nose opens with ripe cherries, dark forest fruit, and graphite, complemented by spicy notes, roasted herbs, and a subtle savory, almost meaty-mineral undertone. The palate is powerful and layered with inky dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate, licorice, and new leather. The structure is firm yet fine-grained, with precise tannins and a fresh tension that balances the whole. The finish is full, concentrated, and long, with a compact and impressive finale. Drinking window and development With 95 points from James Suckling and strong reviews from leading critics, this wine confirms its status within the vintage. The 2022 already displays impressive richness and depth, but will continue to develop from 2027 onwards and will age effortlessly for two decades. Summary of professional reviews The 2022 Clos l'Église is described as powerful, layered, and concentrated, with dark fruit, graphite, and spicy nuances. The wine combines ripeness and opulence with refined tannins and precision. An expressive Pomerol that offers both immediate appeal and aging potential.
