Amarone, the classic dried grape wine from the Valpolicella region, is a relatively new and exciting venture for the Pieropan family. It stems from a desire to test their skills with the Valpolicella region, which, while a close neighbor to Soave, is quite different and entirely unique. It also stems from a desire to create a premium red wine that is both rich and structured, yet elegant and refined, and naturally in line with the entire Pieropan range. This wine is made from the Corvina (60%), Corvinone, Rondinella, Croatina (30%), and ancient traditional Valpolicella varieties (5%), which come from south-facing vineyards with chalky clay soils, situated at an altitude of 350-500 meters above sea level. The grapes are hand-harvested in September and then dried naturally. The grapes are then pressed and destemmed. The must is fermented for approximately 30 days at 23-24°C, during which time it is repeatedly pumped over. Finally, the wine is aged in 500-liter barrels for 36 months, followed by one year in the bottle before release. This characterful wine shines in the glass with its beautiful, intense ruby red color. On the nose, the wine has an intoxicating perfume of black cherries, blackberries, and plums. On the palate, it is complex and rounded, with a powerful structure that supports the fruit and a lovely freshness on the finish. A wine with plenty of character and the potential to age well. This wine is an excellent pairing with game dishes, grilled or braised meats, and strong, mature cheeses. It is also delicious at the end of a fine dinner. Serve at 16-18°C.
