  • Description
Alión 2022 Magnum is a powerful and refined Ribera del Duero with precision, depth, and striking balance. The Alión winery Alión is part of the prestigious Vega Sicilia, but deliberately stands on its own two feet. The estate is located about 15 kilometers from the mother house, near Peñafiel in Ribera del Duero. Since the first vintage in 1993, the goal has been clear: to produce a modern, expressive Tempranillo that showcases the character of the region without being overshadowed by Vega Sicilia. Through continuous investment, including a complete modernization around 2000 and expansion until 2009, Alión has developed into one of the most consistent and recognizable names in Ribera del Duero. You can find more information in the Winery tab. Origin and terroir in Ribera del Duero The vineyards are situated along the Duero River, in a location similar to Vega Sicilia. The soils consist of a mix of limestone, clay, and gravel, providing structure and finesse. The climate is continental, with warm summers and cold winters. This ensures ripe grapes while retaining fresh acidity. The proximity of the river plays an important role in moderating extreme temperatures, contributing to more balanced ripening. Grapes and vinification Alión is made from 100% Tempranillo. The grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously selected. Fermentation takes place in wooden barrels, a deliberate choice that has been applied since the early 2000s to create more complexity and texture. In the cellar, there are approximately twenty large wooden fermentation vats that are regularly renewed. After fermentation, the wine ages in new French oak barriques. In total, there are about 1,000 barrels sourced from various coopers, which ensures nuance and complexity in the final blend. Style and taste profile The 2022 Alión Magnum displays a deep ruby red color. The aroma reveals ripe black cherries, plums, and subtle notes of cocoa, cedar, and spices. In the glass, the wine opens up quickly, showing both power and refinement. The structure is firm yet polished, with ripe tannins and a fresh core that gives the wine length. What stands out is the balance between ripe fruit and precision. The oak influence is present but well integrated, ensuring the whole never becomes heavy. The finish is long, with a combination of dark fruit, spices, and a light minerality. Food and wine pairings This Alión Magnum comes into its own with grilled red meat, such as sirloin or rack of lamb. It also works excellently with game dishes or slow-cooked beef dishes. For a simpler pairing, it can also be served with hard cheeses or mushroom dishes. Decanting is recommended, especially in its early years
