One of the stars of the Valdeorras/Galicia is the winery Val De Sil which focuses strongly on the Galician grape Godello and the red Mencia. The bodega has its vineyards in the valley Sil with its unique slate soils which make the wines of this house unique. The Valdesil Valteiro is perhaps one of the most unique wines. Valteiro is the name of a small Peza (plot) located in the village of Portela. Francisco Prada Gayoso is committed to the preservation of native Gallic grape varieties and planted this small plot of only 0.3HA in 1985 with the Gallic grape María Ardoña in 1985 convinced of the potential of this grape and has now made a world-class wine from it. Unique to this grape in combination with the terroir is that it is a very elegant wine with a beautiful minerality as a result of the unique terroir of the Valteiro vineyard. The Valteiro has matured for 6 months in 500L French oak barriques, then 18 months in a stainless steel tank and then gets another 6 months of bottle maturation before the wine is released on the market. The wine has beautiful notes of wild berries, violets and a hint of minerals. The wine has a nice storage potential thanks to its beautiful tannins. The Valteiro is fresh, complex and original. The Valdesil Valteiro María Ardoña is a special red wine from Galicia (Spain), made from the rare grape variety María Ardoña , a local variant of the Merenzao (related to Trousseau). The wine is elegant, light, fresh and aromatic, with notes of red fruits (such as raspberry and cherry), floral accents, a mineral undertone and lively acidity. The wine is comparable in style to refined wines from the Jura or light Burgundies, and calls for dishes that are subtle and not too heavy.
