This 6.4 Ha domain on top terroir with Haut-Brion as neighbour has made enormous quality steps in recent years. The castle, contemporary renovated by Patrice Pichet with winemaker Stéphande Derenoncourt, is considered by insiders to be among the top of Pessac-Léognan. The Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a deep garnet purple in colour and spreads a seductive array of savoury scents – black olives, charcuterie and Sichuan pepper – over a core of bright redcurrant jelly, black cherry and cassis scents, plus fragrant hints of rose petals and candied tangerine peel. The medium-bodied palate is refreshing and elegantly styled, but with a rock-solid backbone of firm, fine-grained tannins and a very good freshness, finishing long and perfumed. This is a vintage with great longevity potential and should age with fantastic grace. The essence of black fruit comes to the fore here. Partial fermentation with whole berries.
