2023 Sadie Family Pofadder

Eben Sadie is considered one of the pioneers in South African wine growing. Through his insight it can be said that the Swartland region came to be seen in a completely different light. It was Eben who found the older vineyards here and made his famous Columella and Palladius. The Pofadder comes from a vineyard in the Swartland, with soils rich in slate. The vineyard is located on Riebeek Mountain and was clearly the favourite vineyard out of the five choices made for a Cinsault wine. After harvest, there is a strict selection to remove both unripe and overripe grapes. The bunches are then fully fermented in an open barrel and punched down twice a day. After a month, the grapes are pressed in a basket press and the wine is then aged in oak barrels for a year. The Pofadder shows delicate red fruit aromas of great purity and linear qualities; there are soft oriental spice and earthy aromas on the outer edges, suggesting that complexity will increase in the future. The same fruit and deeper earthy aspects are found in the texture and flavour, giving a more serious style of Cinsault with tannins that are also notably supple with a softer acidity. Certainly a wine that should be decanted in its early years and this vintage is expected to have a remarkably long drinking window.
