2021 Château l'If Saint-Émilion

The 2021 Château L'If is a refined and expressive wine from Saint-Émilion, owned by Jacques Thienpont, known for Château Le Pin in Pomerol, among others. Since purchasing the estate in 2010, Thienpont has completely redeveloped the estate, resulting in a wine that reflects the unique terroir of the region. The vineyard covers approximately eight hectares and is located on the chalky plateau of Saint-Émilion. The 2021 vintage is composed of 79% Merlot and 21% Cabernet Franc, which is a higher proportion of Cabernet Franc than in previous years. The grapes were harvested between October 2 and 16, with a yield of 35 hectoliters per hectare. After the harvest, the wine was aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, 50% of which were new wood. The 2021 vintage is characterized by a deep ruby red color and a complex bouquet of ripe blackberries, plums, roses, star anise and a hint of smoked meat. On the palate the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a lively energy, fine tannins and a long, aromatic finish. The influence of the chalky terroir is clearly noticeable, which contributes to the freshness and structure of the wine. Given the structure and complexity of the 2021 Château L'If, it is recommended to keep the wine until at least 2026, with an optimal drinking window until 2050.
