Cantine San Marzano was founded in 1962 when 19 winegrowers from San Marzano joined forces. San Marzano is located in southern Italy in the Puglia wine region, in the heart of the highly acclaimed DOC Primitivo di Manduria. Currently, this cooperative has grown to 1,200 growers from Puglia and Sicily. Since its inception, the latest wine technologies have been utilized here without compromising the very old wine traditions of Puglia. San Marzano's goal is to produce accessible and affordable wines with great love and passion for every wine lover. The provinces of Taranto and Brindisi offer a landscape where vineyards and olive trees grow side by side on a red soil rich in iron and minerals. This characteristic soil and the Mediterranean terroir play an essential role in the production of these and the other premium wines of San Marzano. For the production of San Marzano Vino Rosso d'Italia Collezione Cinquanta, the slightly overripe Primitivo and Negroamaro grapes are destemmed and crushed after being hand-picked. The vines for these grapes are, on average, no less than 50 years old. Due to this advanced age, the wine gains more depth and complexity. Skin maceration and alcoholic fermentation follow. Malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. After this, the San Marzano Cinquanta ages for a further 12 months in French oak barriques. The San Marzano Vino Rosso d'Italia Collezione Cinquanta +7 (7th version of this limited edition) is ruby red in the glass with purple reflections; an intense and complex bouquet with fruity notes attributable to plums and jam, and spicy hints reminiscent of vanilla and liquorice; intense on the palate, with great structure and softness, and a long finish.
