This Grand Cru, owned by Mr Stephan Von Neipperg, has been promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé since the new 2012 classification. Rightly so, because the owner has raised the quality very high through strict selections and low returns. The 2020 Château Canon-La Gaffelière St.-Emilion is a blend of Merlot 55%, Cabernet Franc 30% and Cabernet Sauvignon 15%. The Château Canon la Gaffelière is medium to deep garnet purple in color in the glass. The Canon la Gaffeliere opens with an incredibly evocative scent of lilacs, cherries, raspberries, jasmine and Sichuan pepper over a core of ripe black plums, wild blueberries and dark chocolate with a hint of iron ore and cumin seeds. The medium to full palate reveals a fantastic intensity of blue and black fruit layers, supported by a rock-solid frame of firm, fine-grained tannins and bold freshness, ending long with a fireworks display of fruit, mineral and spicy nuances. An exciting wine from the start and one that must mature very well and should certainly be decanted in its younger years. This is an asset for the cellar.
