- Description
The Steinriese Spätburgunder is Franz Keller's iconic flagship wine. The Steinriese Spätburgunder (GG) comes from a small plot in the Oberberge Bassgeige 1er cru. This vineyard is located diagonally across from the winery. The 100% Burgundian, very old Pinot Noir clones grow here with very low yields. The vineyard is situated at a very high altitude (300-350 meters above sea level) and is characterized by the high iron oxide and even lime content of the volcanic terroir. This produces a very bright, fresh, and iodine-infused bouquet of wild red berries that is very reductive in its youth, yet quite sexy and stylish, with algae notes on the nose. On the palate, this is a silky, fresh, and very refined Pinot Noir with great tension and juicy concentration. The finish is taut, fresh, salty, and full of energy and tension. According to Parker, this is Keller's most exciting Pinot. All the vineyards of the Franz Keller winery are located in the Kaiserstuhl region of Germany, which is part of the Baden wine region. Keller specializes in "Burgunders," meaning Pinots and Chardonnays. Their Spätburgunders (sometimes also called Pinot Noir because they work with clones from Burgundy) are particularly highly regarded internationally. While Magda van der Rijst considered it her "favorite producer of Spätburgunder from all of Germany" last year, this year Lars Daniëls will once again include a Keller wine on his shortlist at the Grosse Gewächse tasting in Wiesbaden. The Kaiserstuhl is Germany's warmest and sunniest wine region, characterized by volcanic soils covered with fertile, high loess deposits that offer excellent growing conditions for what are known in Germany as Burgunder varieties, such as Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay, and Spätburgunder. The Keller Winery boasts some truly stunning vineyards; click here for an overview. At Keller, they use only the finest, carefully selected grapes from the best vineyards and parcels: Schlossberg, Kirchberg, Eichberg, "Im Leh," and "Kähner." These wines are aged in their finest barrels and each possesses unique character, potential, and finesse—truly unique grand crus!
