- Description
The 2023 Platt Vineyard Chardonnay West Sonoma Coast is one of the most impressive new Chardonnays from California. Hailing from the cool West Sonoma Coast, this wine reveals a different side of Californian Chardonnay than many enthusiasts are accustomed to. Here, it is not about ripeness or oak influence, but about tension, minerality, and precision. The combination of an exceptional coastal location, low yields, and a long growing season results in a Chardonnay that is more reminiscent of the great terroir wines of Europe than the stereotypical image of California. Platt Vineyard: one of the great terroirs of California Platt Vineyard is located near Occidental on the rugged coast of Sonoma County. Thanks to the direct influence of the Pacific Ocean, this vineyard is one of the coolest locations in California. Misty mornings, cool sea breezes, and a long growing season create an exceptional balance between ripeness and freshness. The vineyard was developed in 2003 by Lewis E. Platt and quickly grew into one of the most sought-after sources of top-quality fruit for producers such as Littorai, Ramey, Failla, and Rivers-Marie. Only in recent years have the best plots been bottled under the Platt Vineyard name itself, allowing the unique character of this location to come fully into its own. Under the leadership of winemaker Derek Flegal and with the support of Thomas Rivers Brown, Platt Vineyard has quickly developed into one of the most talked-about new names on the West Sonoma Coast. An exceptionally cool growing season The 2023 vintage was characterized by abundant winter rains followed by an exceptionally cool spring. Bud sprouting, flowering, and fruit set occurred three to four weeks later than normal. The summer also remained relatively cool, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly. The harvest took place between October 4 and 26, exceptionally late for California. Thanks to the absence of extreme heat, the grapes were able to reach full phenolic ripeness while retaining their natural freshness. The result is a wine with striking tension and aromatic precision. The wine is made from Chardonnay clones Old Wente and Clone 72. After barrel fermentation, it matured for fourteen months in 228-liter Burgundian oak barrels, 35% of which were new French oak. Through minimal intervention and little bâtonnage, the expression of the terroir remained fully central. Scent, taste and character The 2023 Chardonnay West Sonoma Coast immediately presents a strikingly fresh and mineral style. On the nose, aromas of lemon zest, lime, mandarin, green apple, and verbena come to the fore, complemented by subtle flinty reduction and notes of oyster shells. After some time in the glass, additional layers of white plum, apricot, hazelnut, Meyer lemon tart, and fresh coastal herbs emerge. This aromatic complexity gives the wine striking depth without losing its precision. On the palate, the wine is crisp, energetic, and particularly focused. Bright citrus aromas are supported by pronounced minerality and an almost brackish tension reminiscent of cool coastal vineyards. The texture remains refined and linear, while the fresh acidity provides length and elegance. The finish is pure, mineral, and distinctly saline, with an almost laser-like precision typical of the best terroirs of the West Sonoma Coast. Professional reviews Antonio Galloni awarded the 2023 Platt Vineyard Chardonnay West Sonoma Coast 95 points . He praises the wine's energy, precision, and minerality, and highlights aromas of citrus confit, mandarin peel, white pepper, slate, and finely ground rock. James Suckling was also particularly enthusiastic and awarded the wine 96 points . He praises the combination of concentration, chalky minerality, ripe fruit, lively acidity, and impressive balance. Drinking window and food and wine pairings The wine is already very attractive, but possesses sufficient structure and freshness to develop further. The expected drinking window runs from 2027 t
