- Description
The Jack Pine is an evergreen that grows in an irregular rounded way. Branches spread in a descending or ascending pattern. Bark first comes in as dark but develops scaly ridges as it develops. The branchlets grow divergent needles, yellow - green in color. This specie is known for its many uses commercially as well as in the wildlife. Canadian Indians would use Jack Pine wood to build frames for their canoes. Today, the Jack Pine is used for lumber for construction, telephone poles, and fence posts. In the wild, this tree is a habitat and nesting ground for the endangered Kirtland's warbler bird. Porcupine feed on the bark and red squirrels, chipmunks, mice, and others consume the seeds. Hardy.
